Break apart ground beef and place in an empty nonstick pot which is set over medium - high heat. Immediately (even though everything is still cold) begin pressing down on the beef using a flat edge wooden spoon, thus breaking apart the beef.
When you hear a bit of sizzling, stop pressing and give the beef a 30 second resting period to allow the beef to be slightly heated. Then stir and press the beef for 10 - 15 seconds, and then give it another resting period (30 seconds or so). Continue repeating this until you feel the beef has become firm.

How can you tell when it's done? You'll first notice that the ground beef is soft to the touch and red in colour. But, as you continue heating and browning the beef, it will become firm and grey in colour which is normal.

| How long does it take? It usually takes about 7 - 10 minutes for one pound of ground beef. For two pounds, it can take up to 15 - 20 minutes. But the best way to tell if it's done, is by its texture and colour. Even though this technique is named "browning", do not exceed cooking time, otherwise the beef will be brown in colour and will dry out, and will toughen. |
